Augusteum, between the first and second century A.D. in Cartagena

The Augusteum is located on Caballero Street in the historic old town of the city, where the old Forum stood. It dates between the first and second century A.D. and is therefore an important example of the architectural and social structure of the Roman city.

The priests who worshiped the emperor Augustus met there, showing that the building was used as a tool for the dissemination of imperial ideology. Because of its public function it was richly decorated, as is shown by the luxurious marble floors of the site.

Also to be explored in the centre is the forum, one of the most important places in Roman cities since it was the religious, administrative, political and economic centre, and therefore had the most significant buildings placed around it. It was the place of meetings and transactions in Roman society.
